Fall RV Camping Essentials: What to Pack for Cool Nights

Fall RV camping brings some of the best camping weather of the year.

The days can still be warm and sunny, while the evenings become crisp enough for a sweater, a campfire and a warm drink.
But fall camping does require a little more preparation than summer camping.
If you’re planning one more RV adventure through the Okanagan or elsewhere in British Columbia, here’s what should be on your packing checklist.

1. Warm Layers

Fall weather can change quickly.
Instead of packing one heavy jacket, bring layers that you can add or remove throughout the day.

Pack:

  • Sweaters
  • Fleece layers
  • Warm socks
  • Toques
  • Light jackets
  • Rain gear

The goal is to be comfortable whether you’re hiking at noon or sitting around the campfire at 8 PM.

2. Extra Blankets

Your RV may be warm and cozy, but having extra blankets is never a bad idea.
Keep a couple specifically for evenings outside.
They’re also useful if temperatures drop unexpectedly overnight.

3. Check Your Furnace

This one is important.
Before leaving home, turn your RV furnace on and make sure it is operating properly.

Check that:

  • The furnace starts correctly
  • Warm air is coming from the vents
  • Thermostat works
  • Vents aren’t blocked
  • Propane supply is adequate

The last thing you want is to discover a furnace problem after temperatures drop.

4. Bring Extra Propane

Fall evenings can mean more furnace use.
If you’re travelling somewhere where propane isn’t readily available, make sure you have enough for your trip.
A quick propane check before leaving home can prevent an inconvenient interruption later.

5. Pack Your Outdoor Lighting

The days get shorter in the fall.
That means you’ll be spending more time outside after sunset with less natural light.

Bring:

  • Lanterns
  • Flashlights
  • Headlamps
  • Battery-powered lights
  • Spare batteries

A little extra lighting makes campsite setup and evening activities much easier.

6. Don’t Forget Your Campfire Gear

Fall and campfires were practically made for each other.

Pack your:

  • Camp chairs
  • Firewood where permitted
  • Fire starters
  • Roasting sticks
  • Warm blankets
  • Propane Fire Bowl

Always check the current fire restrictions for the area you’re visiting before starting a fire.

7. Check Your RV’s Batteries

Cooler weather and shorter days can change how much power you use.
Before your trip, inspect your batteries and make sure they’re holding a proper charge.
If your RV uses lead-acid batteries, check fluid levels where applicable.
Also inspect battery terminals for corrosion.

8. Inspect Your Tires

Fall is not the time to ignore your tires.

Before heading out, check:

  • Tire pressure
  • Sidewalls
  • Tread
  • Cracks
  • Uneven wear
  • Tire age

Your RV may have spent much of the summer sitting in one place, so a quick tire inspection is worth the few minutes it takes.

9. Bring Rain Gear

Even if the forecast looks perfect, fall weather can change.
Keep rain jackets and waterproof footwear accessible rather than buried underneath everything else.
Your future self will thank you.

10. Add a Little Comfort

This is the fun part.

Bring the things that make fall camping feel like fall camping.

Think:

-Your favorite coffee mug
-Soup or chili ingredients
-Hot chocolate
– A good book
– Board games
-Cozy blankets

Your RV is your home away from home.

Make it feel like one.

Before You Hit the Road

Give your RV a quick once-over before leaving.

Check:

✔️ Tires
✔️ Batteries
✔️ Propane
✔️ Furnace
✔️ Exterior lights
✔️ Water system
✔️ Roof and seals
✔️ Awning
✔️ Generator, if equipped

A little preparation at home can make for a much better weekend on the road.
